What thoughtful evaluation looks like in action
Every project is different, but the goal is the same: to help mission-driven teams make sense of their data, strengthen their story of impact, and move their work forward. Below are a few examples of how we’ve partnered with organizations to do just that.
Architects in Schools
Architects in Schools had many positive anecdotal reports about their program. However, they had no “hard” data. We worked together over two years to establish their chain of impact with a logic model, develop a customized student survey, and ultimately measure outcomes.

Oregon Education Association
Best-known as the state’s largest educator union, the Oregon Education Association (OEA) provides a host of support for its members. In the early 2020’s, this included scaling up free professional learning opportunities for educators on high-interest topics, using a wide variety of learning designs. OEA leadership wanted to go beyond the typical positive event feedback gleaned from post-event surveys. We worked together over three years to document the chain of impact, including effects on educator retention, teacher leadership, and union membership.

Northwest Regional Education Service District
NWRESD’s Diverse Educator Pathways (DEP) program was in a bind. They knew they were doing good work: recruiting and supporting the next generation of much-needed linguistically and ethnically-diverse teachers. But the pressure was on to show it. They hired us to help. Our formative evaluation documented that DEP established a robust, culturally-grounded pathway for bilingual and Latinx educators in Oregon schools.

Portland Association of Teachers/Portland Public Schools
On the precipice of the pandemic, Oregon education leaders were debating how to spend an additional $1 billion in early learning and K-12 funds, aimed at eliminating inequality in education. The Portland Association of Teachers (PAT) sought input from the historically underserved Latinx and Black communities through in-person forums. Our role in this work was to partner with the PAT equity specialist, co-designing questions and protocols, then stepping back to allow the conversations to unfold in BIPOC-only spaces.
Our resulting analysis of the data can be found here.
BRAVO Youth Orchestras
BRAVO Youth Orchestras connects students in under-resourced schools with world class music education. Our multi-year work together built on the effusive testimonials the program garnered from students, teachers, and families, by adding quantitative data to document their impact. We found that participation not only made students happier and more connected, but they were more likely to attend school and made larger gains on the state’s math assessment than their peers.
